Military Vehicles

Our Battlefield is home to a collection of retired, ex-service military vehicles, ranging from transport vehicles to tanks!

The service life of our vehicles covers more than 30 years from the 1950's through to the 1990's.

SCORPION CVR(t) 1972 - 1997

- Crew 3;  Driver, Commander & Gunner

- Armament; 76mm L23A1 Gun, 7.62mm Coaxial Machine Gun

This mean little tank was used for recon but when required could pack a mighty punch firing HIGH EXPLOSIVE rounds and creating a heavy smoke screen to vanish into from the two smoke grenade dischargers mounted both sides of the turret.

This particular vehichle was the second ever made and was used extensively for training purposes throughout its lifetime. Scorpion CVR(t) of this design took part in lots of different assaults and recconnasance missions. One of the most famous was the assault on Port Stanley as British Troops regained The Falklands from the invading Argentinian troops.

M60 Armoured Personnel Carrier (Yugoslavia) 1965 - 1992

   - Crew: 3
   - Armament: 12.7mm main gun & 7.62mm machine gun
   - Capacity: 13 troops

Our M60 saw action in Bosnia in the 1980's. When it arrived at The Big Sheep Battlefield we found live hand grenades inside along with some live ammo. This was featured on BBC1 and ITV news!

We also found personal letters written by soldiers that had been left behind. The vehicle was also covered in graffiti, marks left by the men who travelled inside. Although the text inside has boarded over (for safety reasons) the external marks are still there to be seen.

BTR 50 Armoured personnel Carrier (Russia) 1954 - 1970

   - Crew: 3; Driver, Commander and Gunner
   - Capacity: 10 troops
   - Armament: 7.92mm mmachine gun

This APC has a special function, it is amphibious! This ability to 'swim' meant that it could transport troops almost anywhere. It was propelled through the water using 2 rear mounted water jets.

The inside of our vehicle currently show some explosive damage, as the Navy bomb squad used the sealed tank body as a safe place to detonate the 2 greandes found inside our other APC the M60

Wessex Whirlwind (UK) 1953 - 1969

   - Crew: 2 pilots
   - Capacity: 12 Troops or 6 Stretchers
   - Primary Role: Submarine Hunter
   - Secondary Role: Search and Rescue

The Whirlwind on our battlefield was last used on oil-rigs in the North Sea. It had a maximum speed of 109mph (95knots) and could climb to 13,000ft.
When outfitted for submarine hunting, they would ofter work in pairs, 1 outfitted with sonar equipment that could be lowered into the water and the other Whirlwind would be fitted with a topedo.

Bedford RL Medium Truck (UK) 1952 - 1980

   - Crew: 2
   - Capacity: 4 Tonnes

The Bedford RL was the British Army's main medium lorryfrom the mid 50's until the last 60's, but continued to be used alongside newer models unil the 80's. Over 74,000 were produced

The 4x4 medium weight truck carried out multiple roles on the battlefield. These included 'Supply Transport' and 'Command & Signals'

Robor 4x4 Light Truck (DDR - East Germany) 1968 - 1985

   - Crew: 2
   - 4x4 Drive

Our 2 Robor trucks have both starred in James Bond Movies!

The green truck in the top image appeared in the 1997 film James Bond Tomorrow Never Dies. Our truck is seen being blown up and tipped over using pyrotechnics at the beginning of the film where Bond hijacks the L-39 which is carrying nuclear weapons at the terrorist arms fair.

The white truck (see arrow) in the bottom image appeared at the back of shot in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough. It was also blown up in a later scene which did not make it to the final production cut. The truck still has its safety glass inside which was fitted by the film crew to protect the stunt driver during this scene!
